Helichrysum / African Immortelle
The word Helichrysum combines the Greek words helios, meaning sun, and chrysos meaning gold. Odoratissimum means ‘strongly aromatic’ or sweet odor.’ For this reason, the Southern Sotho women use the lant (traditionally known as Imphepho) to make a perfumed ointment.
Other uses include treatment of inflamed and painful skin (wounds and acne), muscles and joints, and respiratory ailments and headaches. It is a potent antibacterial agent and deters insects while also relieving tension and insomnia.
Helichrysum is a powerful therapeutic essential oil, mainly based on the synergistic effects of the three main components, α-Pinene, 1,8-Cineol, and β-Caryophyllene. - α-Pinene has antiulcerogenic and gastroprotective properties.
- β-Caryophyllene acts against depression and anxiousness.
- 1,8-Cineol is known for its mucolytic and spasmolytic action on the respiratory tract. Especially in inflammatory airway diseases, such as asthma.
