Most South Africans know this naturalized exotic weed by its more common name, blackjacks as it is found mostly in the veld or on farms. Tagetes is also known as Khakibos and Mexican Marie Gold. This herb is alleged to be a native of Africa, where it is distributed to America, Europe, and Australia and is scientifically known as Tagetes
Tagetes is a mix of a yellow and red amber color and has a citrus smell which in the beginning is unpleasant. After maturing it, it has a sweet fruity mango like smell.
It is used as a carrier oil for perfumes and can be used in baths to help with open wounds and cuts and mixed with massage cream.
The Essential Oil of Tagetes is extracted from its leaves, stem, stalk, and flowers by steam distillation. The main components of this oil are ocimene, limonene, tagetone, and valeric acid.
