How we started
In 2016 Wynand Gericke the owner and founder of Rosehip Farm were introduced to rosehip. Intense research was done to see if there were a greater demand for Rosehip. There were many people living in severe poor conditions with the product growing all around them, but no market for it. Rural areas, villages and communities were grouped together while buyers for the product were obtained.
We trained all the people we could get in a close radius where the rosehips grew wild. Education was given on sustainable wild harvesting. Wynand took a leap of faith when he saw the excitement on the peoples faces and he had a glimpse of how dignity could be restored to the people. He made the following statement: “You can harvest all the rosehips you can, and Rosehip Farm will buy it from you”. This message was conveyed to all the rural areas, villages and communities, not knowing what the outcome would be. To date this message are being conveyed to all new rural areas. Villages and communities were trained and signed up to our project, creating income and upliftment.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime
A few days later we were contacted by a company who supplied us with our 1st substantial order. We could not even complete the order in the 1st season, it just grew after that.
It was good for a few months, but when the rosehip season was over, the realization came that all the people that we uplifted will have no more income after the season. As Wynand was driving through these areas, asking himself what can we do to assist these people? Pondering on this, considering all the options, he remembered the initial days when we first collected the Rosehip. The look on their faces, their posture, the way they came alive when we stopped with the truck to buy and load the products. They were singing and dancing. That’s when he knew we needed to create more moments like that.
Back to the drawing board. Once again research was done to determine what other products are available in these areas, to change the 4-5-month income cycle and grow it all year round. That is when we found Helichrysum Odoratissimum, Pelargonium Sidoides (African Geranium), Artemisia Afra (African Wormwood). An exciting new specie (Felicia Filifolia) was also found.
We currently have over 50 rural Communities / Villages and our aim is to constantly increase this.
This is our story, our goal and our strategy that works for us and our people.
Our vision is rooted in community development, social upliftment and economic empowerment. We strive to improve the lives of people living in rural areas by diversifying the socio-economic sphere in South Africa and Lesotho by making use of valuable natural resources. By training and equipping these communities, high quality organic certified products enter our processing plant that enable us to deliver a consistent homogenies product into the marketplace: Europe, USA, Asia, Australia and Africa.
